Job Description

The Cody Enterprise, a twice-weekly, award-winning, community newspaper, seeks a dynamic, energetic reporter to join its newsroom. The ideal candidate will be capable of writing about multiple facets of our community and interested in telling the story of our area’s rich history, culture and national outdoor treasures. While our newsroom assigns beats, we also encourage our reporters to pursue their own writing projects and interests, and allow them to choose the topics they wish to report. The right candidate should not only have strong storytelling skills and the ability to write on deadline, but also be able to develop and pitch their own material. Both excellent time management and communication skills are also necessary. We have a hybrid newsroom in which reporters are expected to physically be in the office on layout days (Monday and Wednesday) and otherwise free to make their own hours and work from home. While we ask that you read through the responsibilities and qualifications below, we know that some of our strongest writers have come from other disciplines and career backgrounds, and we encourage those curious to apply. We have an award-winning editor and copyeditor who are open to working with and teaching the right candidate to hone their skills and offer on-the-job training and other educational resources. Your responsibilities will include: • Generate 6-8 stories per week
• Take photo and video
• Take direction from the editor
• Meet assigned deadlines without exception
• Sub for reporting vacancies as needed
• Be ethical, honest and empathetic
• Be a team player and help where and as needed
• Be punctual
• Ensure accuracy, fairness and correct spelling in all reportage

Preferred Qualifications:
• Journalism, English, Communications or related bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience
• Open to working the occasional night or weekend (always comes with notice)
• Knowledge of AP-style
• Photography experience
• Current, valid driver’s license and proof of insurance
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time
• Bilingual (English-Spanish) skills a bonus

What we offer:
• Competitive wages
• Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance
• Delta dental insurance
• Two weeks paid holiday annually
• Paid bereavement time, maternity and paternity leave
• Matching 401k program

Cody is a town of 10,000 in northwestern Wyoming with a rich history. While tourism plays a big role in the local economy, traditional agriculture and cowboy culture is still a core component to the community’s identity. The town offers a rich blend of work and play to the right person. Our paper has been here since 1899 and was founded by William 'Buffalo Bill' Cody himself — we pride ourselves in being a legacy outlet and have a community-first mindset.

Outdoor enthusiasts should note that Cody is just an hour from the eastern gate of Yellowstone National Park. Other nearby gems include the Shoshone, Custer-Gallatin and Bighorn National Forests and Grand Teton National Park — and there’s always more to explore. If you enjoy hiking, backpacking, birding, fishing, skiing, snowboarding, back country horseback riding, or any other outdoor recreational pursuits, then this land is a little slice of heaven on earth.

Interested candidates should email their resumes, 3-5 clips of their best work (if you are new to journalism, other writing samples will suffice) and some photography examples to newsroom editor Victoria O’Brien at victoria@codyenterprise.com .
