Tool Maker | Battle Creek, MI

Salary Range: $60,000 - $92,000 depending on experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, fabricate, and modify precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures from blueprints, sketches, or CAD models.
  • Operate a variety of machine tools including lathes, mills, grinders, and EDM machines to produce components with tight tolerances.
  • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of existing tooling to ensure optimal production efficiency.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and optical comparators to verify dimensions and quality.
  • Collaborate with engineers and production teams to identify tooling needs and implement improvements for manufacturing processes.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and quality standards while working with machinery and handling materials.

Recommended Qualifications

  • Completed a recognized Tool Maker apprenticeship program or possess equivalent practical experience (e.g., 5+ years).
  • Expertise in operating manual machining equipment, including lathes, mills, surface grinders, and EDMs.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering blueprints, schematics, and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Skilled in the use of precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and optical comparators.
  • Strong understanding of various tool steels, carbides, and other manufacturing materials, including their properties and heat treatment processes.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities for diagnosing and resolving tooling issues, with meticulous attention to detail.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam)
  • Experience with CNC machining setup and operation
  • Basic welding skills (TIG/MIG) for repair and fabrication
  • Knowledge of heat treatment processes for tool steel
